Dyersburg's undefeated start to the season came to an end on Tuesday night as the visiting Lady Pioneers from Gibson County handed the Lady Trojans their first loss of the 2024 season.
A back-and-forth opening set saw the Lady Pioneers take control midway through thanks to a 7-1 scoring run. Kalli Maclin finally ended the spree with a kill and the Lady Trjoans were able to cut the deficit back to 22-21 after a Murphy Morgan kill moments later. But, Gibson County was able to regain the offensive and take a 25-23 win in the opening set.
Dyersburg fell behind early in the second set before a Preslee Quertermous kill got the Lady Trojans going. Back-to-back blocks from Addie Gatlin and Quertermous gave the black and gold an 8-7 lead. Gibson County answered with a run to take a 17-13 advantage despite an Izzie Odom ace. The Lady Pioneers built an 18-13 lead before Maclin and Morgan added kills.
Gibson County was able to get within striking distance of set point with a five-point advantage at 23-19 before Dyersburg rallied. Anna Katherine Trevathan and Maclin added kills to go along with a block from the senior Maclin which cut the Gibson County lead to 24-23. Dyersburg was able to tie it before a pair of Lady Pioneer points gave Gibson County the 26-24 win in the second set.
Though the Lady Trojans kept it close early in the third set, the Lady Pioneers answered with a pair of runs to take a commanding 22-12 lead late in the game. Despite a late rally by Dyersburg, Gibson County secured a pair of points late to take the third set 25-21 and clinch the match.
The loss drops the Lady Trojans to 4-1 on the season.
Dyersburg has a short turnaround before returning to District 13AA play on Thursday when the Lady Trojans welcome Dyer County to the Terry Glover Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
