SPECIAL TO THE STATE GAZETTE

Timothy Strayhorn graduated from Dyersburg High School in 1982. After graduation, he studied at the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association where he did a four-year, Electrical Lineman Apprenticeship. He brought his talents to the Dyersburg Electric System where he was a lineman and then a linemen’s crew foreman for 28 years, retiring several years ago.

Strayhorn’s true passion has always been basketball and developing the talents of children in our community. He has coached hundreds of athletes over the span of his lifetime through local schools and AAU. In the 2009-2010 school year, he was hired by Dyer County High School as an assistant girls’ basketball coach. A year later, Strayhorn became the head girls’ basketball coach at Three Oaks Middle School, while still assisting at DCHS.

After nine years, Strayhorn stepped down from the DCHS assistant job to take over as both the boys' and girls' head coach at TOMS, where he had a very successful career. Strayhorn then returned “home” and became the Dyersburg High School head girls’ basketball coach in 2021. He began day one building the program back up through hard work, long hours, and the same passion for basketball and our community he’s had for years.

The third season under Coach Tim Strayhorn resulted in a District Championship, a Region Championship, and Dyersburg High School’s first-ever State Championship in basketball. He was named the 2024 State Gazette Coach of the Year for Dyersburg High School. Outside of basketball, Strayhorn enjoys time (mostly in a gym somewhere practicing basketball) with his three daughters and eight grandchildren.
