Dyer County got its week on the volleyball court off to a dominant start on Monday as the Lady Choctaws hosted Jackson Christian and handed the Lady Eagles a three-set loss in Newbern.
“We did a good job bouncing back off the weekend where we had a couple losses,” Dyer County Head Coach Shanna O’Bright said. “We struggled a little bit this weekend.
“But, we ran our offense pretty effectively tonight and we did a much better job at the service line.”
Behind a pair of Briley Abair aces as well as kills from Rylee Key and Teagan Reed, the Lady Choctaws jumped out to an early 15-7 lead in the first set. Later in the frame after another strong run by the orange and white girls, a pair of aces from Reed helped put the Lady Choctaws at set point. An Ava Huke kill moments later sealed the 25-10 win in the opening set.
Dyer County’s dominance continued into the second set as the Lady Choctaws jumped out to a commanding 19-7 lead. Despite a pair of Huke blocks on one play, Jackson Christian was able to rally to cut the lead to 19-10. The orange and white girls ended the set on a 4-2 run to take the second set 25-13.
Jackson Christian was able to keep things close early on, matching Dyer County 6-6 through the opening part of the third set. However, kills from Key and Reed sparked a lengthy run which carried the Lady Choctaws to a 25-14 win in the third set to clinch the sweep.
Reed had 14 kills in the win while Key added a dozen. Huke had seven kills and eight blocks on the night.
Dyer County has a pair of district games on the schedule remaining this week as the Lady Choctaws travel to Martin on Tuesday to play Westview then host Dyersburg on Thursday.
“We just need to be able to run our offense effectively,” O’Bright said. “Hopefully we can do that tomorrow night and again on Thursday night.”
Dyer County travels to Martin on Tuesday to take on Westview at 6 p.m.
