Choctaws, Trojans open golf week with trip to Humboldt

Both local golf teams got an early start to their week as Dyer County and Dyersburg travelled to Humboldt Golf and Country Club as South Gibson hosted the Hornet Classic, an 18-hole tournament, on Monday morning.
Once the cards were turned in following the day on the course, both the Choctaws and the Trojans found themselves in the top six out of a 14-team field.
Dyer County came off the course with a fourth place finish, just six strokes behind third place University School of Jackson, with a 332.
Choctaw Dalton Muncrief led the way for Dyer County with an 82 on the day. The orange and white golfers grouped pretty well in their scores as his teammates Ryan DeSpain and Hoss Harrison each shot 83 during the tournament. Seth LaRue rounded out the Choctaw scoring with an 84.
Meanwhile, Dyersburg was just two spots off Dyer County but two places them behind them as McKenzie slipped in between the two rivals to take fifth with a 333 score.
The Trojans were led by Brett Horner, who shot an 80 over 18 holes. John David Morris was two strokes behind him with an 82 while fellow Trojans Ryan Wesson and Jayce Ellerbrook each shot 86s on the day.
The boys side of the tournament was won by Clarksville as their golfers came off the course with a 301.
In the girls tournament, the Lady Choctaws took fifth place with a 194 score.
Lady Choctaw Kennedy Hill led the way with a 92 while Josie Ferguson came off the course with a 102 to round out the Dyer County scoring. Lily Flagg was right behind her with a 103.
Dyersburg's duo of Stella Madden (116) and Maddie Kate Wells (118) finished the day with a 234.
Dyer County returned to the course at home against Jackson North Side on Tuesday while Dyersburg traveled to Milan. The Choctaws host South Gibson on Monday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. while the Trojans have Gibson County, Halls, and Ripley at home at 4 p.m. the same day.
