As a Volunteer
I think most know that I am a volunteer at the Salvation Army and have a cool ride. Going uphill tends to be difficult for me but I know I hit every bit of 30 mph going down my ramp in the morning, just me with my arms in the air like I am on the Lighting Rod at Dollywood!
One day, while serving, a gentleman approached to pick up a plate lunch. Now, I pride myself on learning everyone's name, it's important to me. Just as it is equally important that people know my name, should they need assistance. This man has never called me by my name. He's sometimes a little hostile and sometimes a little angry. For some reason, amid day 3 of the rain last month, he approached with a smile on his face. I handed him his lunch only for him to smile and say, "Thank you meals on wheels!" Sir, that was the best response ever!
Volunteering is hard but so rewarding. Don't get me wrong. There are times when I just cry and there are times when I want to punch a wall. But, my luck I'd probably break something and then end up with a cast on my arm. Side note - Since being in a wheelchair I have developed the upper body strength of a defensive linemen. I guess it could be exhaustion but more so I think it is sheer frustration.
As a volunteer, I see firsthand how many of our elderly and disabled community members, who are in need, are being failed. There are so many resources in place that should be helping but, due to new computer software, and impossible requirements, many of them have fallen through the cracks. I will get into this more at a later time.
Also as a volunteer, I see just how much different agencies can help those in need. I am so grateful that I can call Misty, Delta, Barbara, Holly, Donisha, and many others on behalf of someone in crisis, or they can call me, and together, we come up with a plan to help. What a beautiful thing!
I strongly encourage everyone to volunteer. There are many organizations in need including the Salvation Army, the Overnight Warming Shelter when temps drop below 40, THS Day Shelter, and the Dyer County SPCA.
Peace and love to all!
