Mother seeks $10 million for gravel pit accident

The mother of a 14-year-old boy killed in a Nov. 1, 1998 collapse in a Meacham community gravel pit has filed a lawsuit asking for $10 million in damages. Donna Ward, the mother of Charles Alan Swinney and Christina Mae Swinney, sued Larry and Dickie Moody, K&W Excavating of Newbern and Keith Underwood, all of whom, the complaint claims, were involved in excavating gravel from the pit in which Charles Alan Swinney died and Christina Mae Swinney suffered severe injuries...

Another former inmate files suit for jail beating

A former inmate at the Dyer County Jail has filed a lawsuit against the county claiming injuries fostered by the jail's overcrowded condition. It is the second such suit filed in the past year. George Taylor, 53, filed the most recent complaint Feb. 22 in Dyer County Circuit Court asking for compensatory damages of $130,000, the state tort liability limit for governmental entities.
