Attempted theft of garden tiller brings 30 days in jail

A pair of Dyersburg men pleaded guilty Tuesday in Dyer County Circuit Court to trying to steal a garden tiller and were each sentenced to serve 30 days in jail. Darrell Benthal, 25, of 1805 Harris St., ands Eric Collins, 19, of 1856 Schaffer St., each pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of property worth less than $10,000 and were sentenced by Judge Lee Moore to serve two years in the Dyer County Jail, suspended to 30 days, and two years of supervised probation...

Miss Trula Welborn passes Former Wal-Mart greeter was 96.

Nearly seven years ago, Miss Trula was a celebrity. On Oct. 20, 1995, Trula Welborn celebrated her 90th birthday in style at her place of employment, the then-new Wal-Mart Supercenter on Lake Road. At the time, the petite, white-haired woman was the oldest of 600,000 Wal-Mart employees nationwide. Local residents couldn't help but be impressed as they entered the store to see Miss Trula: sticker gun in hand, a smile on her face and a pleasant "hello" for everyone...
