Suspect in armed robbery nabbed after 100 mph chase

A 31-year-old Newbern man was arrested for an armed robbery this morning at Duncan's Food Mart in Dyersburg after a high-speed chase that exceeded 100 miles per hour on the busy U.S. Highway 51 Bypass. At the time of the robbery at Duncan's, 1755 St. John Ave., Jeffery Wilkes, of the 300 block of Grayson Street, was free on bond on another armed robbery charge stemming from an incident at Jerry's Market in Newbern in May, Newbern Police Chief Harold Dunivant said...

The battle over the state budget claimed its first casualty in Dyer County Tuesday night when the County School Board reluctantly voted to rescind an earlier decision to open a new middle school in Newbern this fall. Faced with a potential shortfall of as much as $1.5 million and with no clear indication from Nashville on the level of funding that would be given to Tennessee public schools in the coming year, the board by a vote of six to three elected to postpone the opening of a middle school in the old Dyer County High School building for a year. ...

Bicycle scufflers case reset

The cases of four people charged in connection with an altercation June 14 over a bicycle were continued Tuesday in Dyersburg Municipal Court. The four are scheduled to appear in city court at 4 p.m. July 16 to have preliminary hearing dates set.
