Volunteer fire departments may lose access to hydrants

Bonicord firefighters may be at risk of losing their only source of pressurized, clean water. The Bonicord fire department received notice last week that a blow-off hydrant used by the city's volunteer firefighters for nearly 30 years to fill up tankers is no longer accessible to them. The hydrant is property of the County Wide Utility District, and officials of the district said in an Aug. 4 notice that it is not the county's responsibility to provide water for fire departments...

There is a Tennessee statute that says until a minor turns 18 he or she must be enrolled in school. According to that law, Matt Nichols, 17, of Newbern is a truant. The problem is that Matt doesn't want to be a truant. He wants to attend Dyer County High School with his friends. Unfortunately, there is another law that prevents him from doing that. It is another case of the classic "Catch 22." In this case, laws drafted in years gone by may no longer reflect the nature of a mobile society...
