A minister from Kentucky, most recently serving in Union City, has been named superintendent of the Dyersburg District of the United Methodist Church. Stan Waldon assumed the superintendency of the 70-church district on June 20. He replaces Dr. Mickey K. Carpenter who was appointed superintendent of the Paris District. Callis retiring from Holy Angels after more than decade of service

Father Elbert Callis, pastor of Dyersburg's Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church, hopes he is headed for a soft landing as he moves toward retirement. Heartworm cases rising in local pets

Area veterinarians believe the number of dogs infected with heartworms is rising. Dr. Pierce White, a veterinarian at Animal Care Clinic, said he's never seen as many dogs testing positive for heartworm infestations as he has this year. Among the dogs screened for heartworms between April 1 and June 21 at the Animal Care Clinic, 17 percent had positive results. That's nearly three times higher than last year's rate of 6 percent for the same time period...

Tanner irate over amnesty effort for insurgents
