Police investigating teenagers' alcohol, prescription overdoses

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse of at least three teenagers on Saturday from apparent drug and alcohol overdoses. The juveniles, all middle school students, were airlifted to LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis. Aaron Montgomery, who wished to be identified to warn others of prescription drug danger, 13, was released Monday. Another boy involved in the matter remains hospitalized, and a girl will continue in-patient counseling in Memphis...

City surprised by $150,000 parks grant announcement

City officials in Dyersburg were expecting to hear word about a state recreation grant for repairs at the Dyersburg Activity Center in September, but Gov. Phil Bredesen gave his stamp of approval Monday. The city will receive $150,000 from a Local Parks and Recreation fund for renovations at the recreational facility. The grant is a 50-50 match, meaning the city must also invest $150,000 in the project, some of which can be "in kind" for labor and materials...

Board OKs $4.7 million in borrowing for school, equipment

The Dyersburg City Board on Monday night agreed to accept an offer by the firm Duncan-Williams Inc. of Memphis for issuing $4.7 million in capital outlay notes that would cover new equipment purchases and refurbishing of the high school. The city was also given a bid by Morgan Keegan and Company for municipal bonds to cover the capital improvement costs but opted for the Duncan-Williams offer due primarily to a savings of nearly $20,000 in issuance costs...
