A national study funded by the MetLife Foundation released last week claims the state of Tennessee could save big dollars in law enforcement if it could increase the number of males who receive high school diplomas by 5 percent. Entitled "Saving Futures, Saving Dollars: The Impact of Education on Crime Reduction and Earnings," the study projected the state could save $133 million a year in prison costs and property losses, plus add an annual $50 million in wages to Tennessee's tax revenues by boosting the graduation rate. ...

State approves plans for DSCC Student Center

The Tennessee Board of Regents and State Building Commissioner have approved plans for a new 14,000-square-foot Student Center addition at Dyersburg State Community College, said Kent Jetton, director of the physical plant. The building will sit approximately 20 to 30 feet to the east of the existing student union. According to Jetton, the governor's office and state legislature have approved about $4.3 million for construction of the new building and renovation of the original structure...

'Part of a person' found in sewer dig

CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- A construction crew working to repair a sewer problem on Tuesday cracked what appeared to be a burial vault when what police describe as "part of a person" was found in a pipe. The location of the dig, near the First United Methodist Church on Broadway, is thought to be a long-forgotten cemetery. Work on the area was immediately halted and city officials began to research the history of the area. The land evidently was the site of an early city cemetery...
