Woman wins service club's international photo contest

Trimble Lions Club member Robin Butler recently won first place in the Lions International Environmental Photo Contest, held in Chicago, Ill., for her black-and-white photograph entitled "Sun Streaked Country Road." Nearly 44,000 Lions Club members from all over the world entered the contest with Butler's art being chosen as one of 52 finalists from 50 different countries. Boy finds unique float bobbing in Mississippi

On a recent fishing trip on the Mississippi River with his family, 8-year-old Jeffery Dillard of Newbern ended up netting the most unusual catch when he went exploring along the shore. Among the logs and stones littered across the bank, Jeffery found a small ceramic float similar to a turtle shell or a mushroom. Phone warning system hampered from intense heat

An automated telephone warning service evidently failed on Monday to warn Milltown residents of the cotton mill fire due to the intense heat on transmission lines. Emergency Operations Center communications chief Mark Grant said the calls - warning residents of the fire and asking them to check their property for burning embers and get garden hoses ready for use - "apparently were severely hampered by the fact that the fire was so hot."...
