Eagles, Lady Eagles kick off season with ‘Elite Eight Classic'

The Dyersburg State Community College Eagles and Lady Eagles basketball teams kicked off the season a combined 3-1 over the weekend, with the men's team running a perfect 2-0 in the Dyersburg State "Elite Eight" Classic. Dyersburg State hosted teams from Rend Lake, Shorter, Coahoma and Jackson State community colleges. National wildlife refuges to close for winter

The Reelfoot and Lake Isom national wildlife refuges will close for the season on Thursday, Nov. 15. Most of the refuges will remain closed until March 15 so that wintering waterfowl and bald eagles may use them without disturbance. At Reelfoot and Lake Isom NWRs, the public access gates will be closed, as will the waters on Reelfoot's Long Point Unit and Lake Isom. Freezing hunters trapped in mud rescued

Two men preparing a duck blind in the Moss Island area on Monday were rescued after almost freezing to death. Boy, 9, accidentally shot through chest by his father

A rural Newbern boy was accidentally shot by his father while shooting targets on Sunday. According to the Dyer County Sheriff's Department report, Garrett Coburn, 9, was reported to have ran in front of his father's .22 caliber handgun at about 1:10 p.m. Sunday at 338 Copeland Rd. The boy's father, Randy Coburn, was reported to have been in shock when interviewed by deputies at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center...
