Barker wins House primary, loses county

Union City attorney Judy Barker won the Democratic primary for the 77th House District seat, but lost Dyer County big to Cat Corner farmer Larry Bennett. Barker totaled an unofficial count in Dyer, Obion and Lake counties of 3,385 (51.8 percent) to Bennett's 2,519 (38.6 percent) and Obion County commissioner Jerry Grady's 489 votes (9.2 percent) and Newbern resident Ross Dubrule's 27 votes (.04 percent)...

Childress garners Chancery Court seat

General Sessions Judge Tony Childress on Thursday won a convincing victory to fill the vacant Dyer and Lake counties Chancery Court post in an election with a paltry 20 percent participation. According to the yet-uncertified tally, Childress won 45.81 percent in Dyer and Lake counties, followed by Dyersburg attorney and Lake County native Mark Hayes, with a combined 30.93 percent. ...

ERMCO to lay off as many as 80

Officials at the Dyersburg ERMCO plant announced on Thursday that it will begin a layoff of 70 to 80 employees effective Sept. 8, a move that will affect nearly 10 percent of its workforce. "The transformer industry has been hard hit by the slowdown in residential and commercial construction and the resulting reduction in both single-phase and three-phase padmount transformer installations," said ERMCO President and CEO Bill Reffert. ...

Excel Polymers cuts third of force

Excel Polymers announced Thursday that it will restructure the size of its Dyersburg manufacturing facility by eliminating 130 jobs from a work force of 450. "Excel Polymers has decided to adjust the size of its Dyersburg manufacturing facility to support a reduced, but profitable, operation," said Dyersburg Plant Manager Tim Dunagan. "Additionally, Excel Polymers reviewed its support structure and is adjusting the size and scope of resources that will be needed to support its customer base."...
