At the Shelter
(Features ~ 08/19/10)
Friends, thank you for helping us in our efforts to return Roxo to her owners. A special thanks to Mr. Gerald Finley, CEO of LifeSafe Security Corp. in Finley, for stepping up to the plate to make this possible. Donations will be used for vetting and transport to the airport. This & that at the shelter: We currently have a Maine coon-mix cat, a dilute calico, some cute kitties, and many more. We also have several black and white border collies, a cute Chihuahua, several buff and yellow labs, black labs, Catahoulas, feists (small house dogs), shepherds and others. 'Tinker' is a glossy black kitty with yellow eyes. He is 5 months old and looking for a home with cat lovers. 'Felicia' is a stunning longhaired Maine coon-mix. Maine coons originated in the 1860s in the US. The distant history of the Maine is unknown. Its probable ancestors include British cats that came with early settlers, and longhaired Russian or Scandinavian cats on ships in Maine's ports. The harsh New England winters require dense coats and a size sufficient for hunting. These gentle giants can weigh up to 22 or more pounds. (Source: Fogle's The new Encyclopedia of the Cat) Stop by The Pet Stop, located behind Walmart, to see a selection of shelter cats and kittens. 'Armadillo' is a handsome shepherd/Catahoula-mix. His mother was a Catahoula and his dad, a full-blooded German shepherd. 'Armadillo' is good with domestic animals but not farm animals. He looks whimsical with one blue eye and one brown eye and has a beautifully marked coat. Please give this boy a second chance at life. 'Jasper' is one of the cutest little feist housedogs at the shelter. He is tan and white and loves attention. 'Jasper' is heartworm positive and currently on Advantage Multi, which he will take once a month the rest of his life. Over a period of time, it will kill the heartworms. This is vet approved and so much better than the traditional harsh treatment he would have had to go through. He is a happy dog and loves everyone. You will never be lonely again with 'Jasper' as a companion dog. He wants to be where you are. Check us out on Dyerhumane.org or petfinder.com. Make a difference in our local homeless shelter pets' lives. Don't hesitate. If you don't, who will? Volunteer today! Please call or stop by the shelter office for details. We need you to hand out treats and toys to the pets, walk dogs, give dogs/puppies baths to make them more appealing and adoptable, socialize pets and any other way you want to help during shelter hours on your schedule. We have an enchanting visitation room with colorful pet murals and also a grassy, fenced area where dogs can romp and play. The shelter appreciates and needs supplies such as canned cat and dog food for special diets, non-clumping, dust-free litter, non-choking cat/dog toys and stuffed animals for cuddling (no beanie babies, please), treats, dog blankets, bath towels, paper towels, toilet paper, and office supplies. We also need trophies of any kind. We refurbish with a dog motif and give as prizes in the annual Bark in the Park dog show. Help a local homeless shelter pet by making a tax-deductible donation to honor and remember your loved ones and pets. Categories are: The Beagley Fund (heartworm treatment) which seems to stay depleted, General Fund, Champ Lewis Fund (monetary adoption assistance), Save-a-Life Makeover (professional grooming to make a pet more appealing and adoptable), Honorariums and Memorials. Mail to the Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 223, Dyersburg, TN 38025-0223. Be sure and specify which fund you would like your donation to be directed. Also, don't forget to specify who the donation is to, with complete address and who the donation is from, with complete address. We will do the rest. Thank you for helping the animals! Please visit the shelter between 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. Closed to the public on Sunday. Our shelter is located at 1120 E. Court St. and phone number is 731-285-4889.
