Volunteer firefighters honored by commission

Two Newbern firefighters were honored Monday for doing what they were trained to do: fight fires and save lives. A federal jury determined two years ago that a Bogota motorist and the Illinois Central Railroad were equally to blame for a 2003 collision. The battle didn't end there, though. A few months after the trial, U.S. District Court Judge Bernice Donald heard claims that one witness lied and that Illinois Central Railroad and its legal team had acted inappropriately.
