At the Shelter
(Features ~ 11/04/10)
We currently have some adorable terriers, a full-blooded shih tzu, a very sweet rottie puppy, feists (small house dogs), Chihuahuas, a basset-mix, a gentle mastif/redbone-mix female and pups, yellow and black labs with cute pups, a collie-mix, and many more. On the feline side, several Siamese-mix, orange, dilute, calicos, precious kittens, long, medium and short hairs of all sizes and colors. Our three cat rooms are full of fetching felines. Please visit at your earliest convenience. If you own or have access to a computer, check us out on Facebook.com. Type Dyersburg/Dyer County Humane Society to see our page. Also go to Dyerhumane.org or petfinder.com and type 38024 zip to see our shelter pets. We receive over 100 pets a week and time is of the essence. 'Angel' is a gorgeous orange-and-white girl with large golden eyes. She is a sweetheart and wants a home with cat lovers. 'Bobbette' is a beautiful gray-and-white tabby, who is sweet and affectionate. Having such gentle natures, both of these cats will make excellent house/companion pets. These girls are the longest residents at the shelter and must find homes as soon as possible. We take in over 20 pets a day and stay at capacity. If you want to add a kitty to your household, please consider these wonderful pets. 'Sarge' is one of the cutest little terriers at the shelter. If you want a friendly, happy pup, save his life today and adopt. He will be a small housedog and is so deserving. 'Shasta' is a heartworm-negative collie/shepherd mix who is used to being someone's baby. She was surrendered because her owner could no longer take care her. Shasta has been at the shelter awhile and is desperately seeking a loving home. She enjoys being petted and loves attention. In 1943, the novel "Lassie Come Home" was bought by Hollywood. Three hundred collies auditioned for the role. One of them, a rough collie named Pal, had been sold to trainer Rudd Weatherwax for $5 because he was too lively for his family. Pal was selected for the role, even though he was male. In the following years, a series of Lassie films was produced. Pal, now Lassie in both his own mind and that of the public, had his own apartment, worked a maximum of seven hours a day, and had stunt doubles perform all the dangerous sequences. The films were so successful that a television series was developed in the 1950s. After Pal died, the films continued, using other rough collies to play Lassie, but never with the panache of the original dog. (Source: Fogle's The Encyclopedia of The Dog) Would you like to become a foster parent? We need dog-friendly foster homes for our pets. This saves the life of the pet plus saves the life of the one who takes its place. We also need volunteers. Call or stop by the shelter office for details. Our volunteers enjoy handing out treats and toys to the pets, dog walking, giving dogs/puppies baths to make them more appealing and adoptable, socializing dogs and cats plus any other way they want to help during shelter hours on their schedule. We have a cheerful visitation room filled with colorful pet murals and also a grassy, fenced play area for dogs. The shelter has many needs such as canned cat and dog food for special diets, non-clumping, dust-free litter, non-choking cat/dog toys, stuffed animals for cuddling (no beanie babies, please), treats, dog blankets, bath towels, paper towels, toilet paper, and office supplies. We also need trophies of any kind. We refurbish with a dog motif and give as prizes in the annual Bark in the Park dog show. Call the shelter office for details or if you have questions. The holiday season is just around the corner. What better way to honor and remember your loved ones than to make a tax-deductible donation to help local homeless shelter pets. Categories are: The Beagley Fund (heartworm treatment) which seems to stay depleted, General Fund, Champ Lewis Fund (monetary adoption assistance), Save-a-Life Makeover (professional grooming to make a pet more appealing and adoptable), Honorariums and Memorials. Mail to the Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 223, Dyersburg, TN 38025-0223. Be sure and specify which fund you would like your donation to be directed. Also, don't forget to specify who the donation is to, with complete address and who the donation is from, with complete address. We will do the rest. Thank you for helping the animals! Your donations keep our doors open. Please visit the shelter between 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. Closed to the public on Sunday. Our shelter is located at 1120 E. Court St. and phone number is 731-285-4889.
