DSCC to present 'The Boys Next Door'
(Local News ~ 03/25/11)
The Dyersburg State Community College Theatre Department will provide local residents with a unique perspective in its spring play, scheduled March 31 through April 2. The DSCC cast and crew are making final preparations for a spring production of "The Boys Next Door," by playwright Tom Griffin. An off-Broadway success, "The Boys Next Door" is a very funny - yet very touching - play focusing on the lives of four mentally challenged men. The main characters live in a communal residence under the watchful eye of their sincere, but increasingly unsatisfied social worker. While the play is marked with compassion and understanding, it also overflows with laughter. The script is a celebration of the unique relationships and everyday mayhem in the men's lives, offering a chance for patrons to witness both large and small dramas that result among the men and others who pass through their little world. "My character is Norman," said DSCC Associate Professor of Mathematics Bobby Solmon. "He works at a doughnut shop. He is retarded and in love with Sheila. He is obsessed with his keys and doughnuts. It's a fun character. He is a sweet character." "I play Norman's roommate, Arnold," said Shawn Gilbreath of Dyersburg. "He is a very nervous person. I am sort of 'OCD', myself, so I can relate to him. But Arnold is out there." Norman and Arnold reside in a group home for the mentally challenged. They are joined by Lucien, Barry and Jack as leaders of the cast. "Lucien is the most retarded of the group," said Kadeem Riley of Dyersburg, who has named the voice he uses to portray Lucien his 'Green Mile Voice'. "He is proud of his library card and his Spiderman tie. He thinks he can read really hard books, but he really can't. And he really doesn't know his ABCs." "Barry is a fun role to play because you get to switch back and forth," said Drew Dellinger of Union City. "He is a liar. He is grandiose and has a bravado, until his lie begins to crumble." "While the other characters are mentally challenged, Barry has a mental illness," said DSCC Associate Professor of Speech and Theatre Meleia Lewis. "He is schizophrenic." Joel Enochs of Dyersburg portrays Jack Palmer. It is Enochs' third time as a cast member of "The Boys Next Door." He played Barry in both DSCC's 1989 presentation of the play and a production at the Newbern Depot. "Bill Parmenter, who plays the small part of Mr. Hedges has also participated in a past performance of the play," said Lewis. "He played Mr. Klemper, a part played by Ken Jones in our play." The supporting cast includes Mary Kathryn Day, Ken Jones, Bill Parmenter and Tess Sparkman, all of Dyersburg; Hannah Evans of Newbern; Tracie Langley and Clint Vickery, both of Halls; and Ashley Marshall of Union City. Performances will take place in the First Citizens National Bank Auditorium in the Campus Activities Building at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 31 through Saturday, April 2. Seating is limited. Tickets, available at the door, are $4 for senior citizens and DSCC students, faculty and staff; and $6 for others. Those interested in more information may contact Director Meleia Lewis at 286-3261.
