An up-close look at a mole cricket

Alice Light of Dyersburg recently found this unusual looking insect in her garage. Light had never seen one and took this specimen to Dyersburg State Community College where professors identified it as a mole cricket. According to Wikipedia, mole crickets are relatively common, but because they are nocturnal and spend nearly all their lives underground in extensive tunnel systems, they are rarely seen. The mole crickets are the family Gryllotalpidae, in the order Orthoptera (grasshoppers, locusts and crickets). Mole crickets are cylindrical-bodied insects about 3--5 centimeters (1.2--2.0 in) long, with small eyes and shovel-like forelimbs highly developed for burrowing.

Modern Woodmen of America matches funds for war memorial

Dyer County Mayor Richard Hill (second from left) accepts a donation from David Woods (far right) of the Modern Woodmen of America as Max Woods and Doug Shepherd look on. The $2,500 donation was a match from the organization to build the Korean War Memorial on the courthouse lawn. Donations can be made at any First Citizens Bank location by asking for the Korean War Memorial fund.
