DSCC to host Law Enforcement and EMS Day

Dyersburg State Community College's Criminal Justice and Emergence Medical Services (EMS) departments will host a Law Enforcement and EMS Day on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. -- 1 p.m. at the Dyersburg campus. On hand for the event will be the Tennessee National Guard Counterdrug Task Force Methamphetamine Drug Awareness Trailer (shown above), medical services and local and state law enforcement agencies, EMS and police helicopters, and canine demonstrations. DMS dance team performs in Knoxville

The girls on Dyersburg Middle School's dance team have had a very busy year. Accompanied by DMS dance team captain Amy Staggs, the girls recently took a trip to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville to participate in Spirit Day. The dance team performed prior to kickoff, dancing to "Rocky Top" at Neyland Stadium before the Tennessee Volunteers played Western Carolina, and afterward was able to enjoy the game with their families...

Local seed seer sees harsh winter ahead

This tongue-twister of a headline may seem silly, but not to Libby Davis. Davis is a "persimmon seed seer" and uses the seeds of persimmon berries to forecast the weather. According to Davis, if you cut open a persimmon seed from a tree that is growing locally, by looking at the shape of the embryo inside you can forecast the severity of the approaching winter. It is best to use ripe seeds, so if the persimmon makes you pucker when you taste it, let it ripen a little longer...
