Dyer County heads to Lexington with playoff chances on the line

With four games left in the regular season, the Choctaws found themselves sitting at 2-4 in Region 7-4A and on the outside looking in to the playoff picture. After winning the past three weeks in a row, Dyer County has a chance tonight to put themselves in the playoffs when the Tribe travels to Lexington.

Trojans look to secure home field in first round in playoffs tonight

It's been three years since Dyersburg's J.C. Sawyers Stadium has played host to playoff football and the Trojans can assure themselves and their fans that streak can come to an end in two weeks if the black and gold can defeat visiting South Gibson tonight in the team's final regular season game.

Lady Trojans' state tournament run ends as Signal Mountain dominates close of sets to sweep Dyersburg

The Lady Trojans fought hard through a tough loss on Thursday afternoon in the consolation bracket of the Class AA State Tournament at Siegel High School in Murfreesboro, going toe to toe with the Lady Rebels in each set before late rallies by the Lady Rebels led to three straight-set wins by Signal Mountain to eliminate Dyersburg and end the Lady Trojan season on the second day of the tournament.

Pantry at Hillcrest Baptist open Saturday

The Hillcrest Baptist Church food pantry, at 825 Hillcrest Ave. in Dyersburg, will be open from 9--11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. The food boxes are first come, first served and anyone with a need qualifies. For those who plan to attend, please enter the church through the office entrance on the north side of the property. For more information, you may call the church office Monday -- Friday 8 a.m. -- 5 p.m. at 731-285-6530. Hillcrest Baptist opens its food pantry the fourth Saturday of each month.

Food Rite to host bake sale, proceeds to benefit Larry Chilcutt

Three years ago, Dyer County resident Larry Chilcutt received devastating news, as he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with Philadelphia chromosome, a specific genetic abnormality in chromosome 22 of leukemia cancer cells. Since hearing the news, Larry and his wife of 16 years Tabitha have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions brought on by the disease, as their lives have been flipped upside down.

At 10 a.m. Thursday morning, a large crowd of school officials, family members, and the Dyer County High School student body made way to the DCHS gymnasium in anticipation of the 2016 Investment in Excellence Ceremony, where numerous students are praised and awarded for their hard work and academic success.

Courthouse dome restoration begins

Standard Maintenance Company of Memphis is now in full swing! Beginning Tuesday evening, construction workers began erecting scaffolds stretching to the top of the courthouse dome in preparation of upcoming restorations. The restoration of the dome is expected to begin sometime next week. Funding for the project in the amount of $78,000 was allocated in 2016-17 Dyer County budget back in July. According to Dyer County Mayor Chris Young, the project, in years past, has cost the county as much as $135,000.

Newbern receives $900,000 grant, OKs restructuring of police dept.

The Newbern board of Mayor and Aldermen convened recently for its regularly scheduled meeting, marking the last official meeting before Newbern will be welcoming fresh faces to the board in light of upcoming November elections. Items on the agenda included grant funds, property condemnations, the purchase of a new Public Works vehicle, restructuring of the Newbern Police Department, Safe Room updates, and the creation of an advisory board which will work towards establishing pay increases for future board members and aldermen.

Land transaction for Fairfield Inn now complete

The land transaction for the development of Dyersburg's newest lodging accommodation, Fairfield Inn & Suites, has recently been completed. The hotel, which will feature 75 rooms with 87 parking spaces, will be constructed on Radio Road across from Love's Travel Stop. 'We are pleased to announce today that the land transaction for the new Fairfield Inn & Suites is now complete,' announced Bob Carpenter of Carpenter Real Estate Company Inc. of Union City. 'The 75-room hotel will be located on a four-acre site, west of Cracker Barrel, on Radio Road. Construction for the $8 million-plus project will begin shortly. We would like to thank Mayor John Holden and his planning staff, including Thomas Mullins, for their kindness and professionalism during the planning process. The city of Dyersburg has a pro-business culture that obviously begins with Mayor Holden.' According to Carpenter, ground breaking on the project should commence within the next 60 days. The Fairfield Inn & Suites establishment is expected to be open for business in late 2017.
