What is Memorial Day?
(Local News ~ 05/27/18)
Not to be confused with Veterans Day, where all who have served in America’s armed forces are recognized, Memorial Day is set aside to honor the brave men and women who lost their lives while serving and defending the country. The day is often spent with family and friends as part of a 3-day weekend; however, it is much more than that. Many Americans observe the day by visiting cemeteries or hosting parades and various events paying tribute to the fallen. Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1971, and though only federally celebrated for 47 years, the origins of the remembrance day can be traced back to the end of the Civil War.
