Scarlet Rope Project hosts meeting on human trafficking

Roughly 33 people attended the awareness meeting by the Scarlet Rope Project on Tuesday morning at First Presbyterian Church. Scarlet Rope Project Executive Director Julanne Stone presented on their work to rescue ladies and girls from sex trafficking and help restore their lives. Investigator T.J. King of the Crimes Against Children division of the Madison County Sheriff's Department presented on Internet Safety. The Scarlet Rope Project is based in Jackson but serves counties in the Dyersburg area. Individual, business and organization donations along with grants and United Way funding make the Scarlet Rope Project ministry efforts possible.

Chamber holds annual business expo

In conjunction with National Small Business Week, the Dyersburg/ Dyer County Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual business expo, inviting local businesses to showcase products and general services they provide to the general public. This year, the event was held on Thursday, May 2 from 3-7 p.m. at the Lannom Center. Over 50 vendors were in attendance. The theme for the event was Cinco de Expo, a play on Cinco de Mayo, and even offered a taco bar for those in attendance. Many vendors gave away various prizes as well as free goodies and promotional items. A happy hour for chamber members and exhibitors was held from 5-7 p.m. Making the event possible was the support of corporate and event sponsors.

Man sentenced to 240 months for role in drug trafficking organization

Memphis, – Damien Nixon, 40, was sentenced to 240 months imprisonment for his role in a conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute in excess of 50 grams of actual methamphetamine. U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant announced the sentence on Friday, May 3.
