(Local News ~ 07/03/23)
The Veterans’ Museum hosted a book signing for author Terry Irwin of Cape Girardeau, MO. Irwin recently finished his book ‘Sgt. Dinwiddie’s War’ which details the events his father-in-law Don Dinwiddie survived on January 29, 1944. Sgt. Dinwiddie was a radio operator on board the B-17 G.I. Sheets when it began to lose engines during a mission destined for Frankfurt, Germany. The plane lost oil pressure in an engine and had to drop out of formation over Belgium and was eventually shot down by a German Focke Wulf FW-190. The plane had to belly land in a Belgium field. For four months, the crew was aided by members of the Belgium underground. They could not go outside in daylight because they could not speak the language and would be discovered. After being betrayed and captured by the German army, he spent the remainder of World War II as a POW in the Stalag Luft IV prison camp. The last 86 days were spent on a 600-mile forced march. Copies of the book are still available at the Museum during business hours.
