Positive COVID-19 cases in Dyer County increases to 15

At 2 p.m. Friday, April 10, the Tennessee Department of Health released their daily update on COVID-19 cases statewide, as well as in every county. During Friday’s update, the department noted there were 15 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Dyer County, 3 recoveries, and 192 tests resulting in negative results.

Statewide, the number of positive COVID-19 cases was at 4,862. Of the confirmed cases, the department of health noted 536 individuals have been hospitalized, with 2,878 not hospitalized, and 1,448 cases pending. They also reported 11,45 recoveries and 98 fatalities. The total number of negative cases in Tennessee was at 57,937. The total amount on people tested statewide has been 62,799.

Referring to the statewide hospitalization and recovery numbers, the Tennessee Department of Health mentioned hospitalization status is gathered at the time of diagnosis. The number indicates the number of patients that were ever hospitalized during their illness. It does not indicate the number of patients hospitalized at the current time of the update. As for recoveries, the TDH defines recoveries as individuals who have been confirmed to be asymptomatic by their local or regional health department and have completed their required isolation period or are at least 21 days beyond the first test confirming their illness.

At the state public health laboratory, a total of 3,465 COVID-19 tests have been performed, resulting in 3,088 negatives and 377 positive.

In all other commercial and private laboratories, a total of 59,334 COVID-19 tests have been completed with 54,849 testing negative and 4,485 positive.

The majority of positive cases reported are mostly in the Nashville metropolitan area of Middle Tennessee, such as Davidson Co. (Nashville – 1,048 positive; 7,061 negative; 204 recoveries), Rutherford Co. (Murfreesboro – 222 positive; 1,851 negative; 49 recoveries), Sumner Co. (Gallatin/Hendersonville – 413 positive; 1,565 negative; 78 recoveries), Williamson Co. (Franklin – 288 positive; 2,210 negative), and Wilson Co. (Mt. Juliet/Lebanon – 123 positive; 1,226 negative).

In other metro areas, Knox Co. (Knoxville) has 157 positive cases (1,927 negative; 117 recoveries), while Hamilton Co. (Chattanooga) had 102 confirmed cases (1,144 negative; 38 recoveries).

In West Tennessee, Shelby Co. (Memphis) led the state, according to Friday’s update, with reported COVID-19 confirmed cases. The state health department noted Shelby Co. had 1,083 positive cases with 4,965 negative and 129 recoveries.

The COVID-19 test results, as well as recovery numbers, for all West Tennessee counties, reported as of 2 p.m. Friday, was as follows:

Benton – 4 positive, 74 negative; Carroll –10 positive, 187 negative, 6 recoveries; Chester – 6 positive, 106 negative, 4 recoveries; Crockett – 0 positive, 65 negative; Decatur – 1 positive, 64 negative; Dyer – 15 positive, 192 negative, 3 recoveries; Fayette – 28 positive, 261 negative, 3 recoveries; Gibson – 18 positive, 273 negative, 5 recoveries; Hardeman – 7 positive, 113 negative, 1 recovery; Hardin – 2 positive, 206 negative, 1 recovery; Haywood – 13 positive, 86 negative, 2 recoveries; Henderson – 2 positive, 155 negative, 1 recovery; Henry – 6 positive, 147 negative, 2 recoveries; Lake – 0 positive, 23 negative; Lauderdale – 8 positive, 107 negative, 1 recovery; Madison – 56 positive, 557 negative, 4 recoveries; McNairy – 9 positive, 102 negative, 4 recoveries; Obion – 5 positive, 106 negative, 1 recovery; Shelby – 1,083 positive, 4,965 negative, 129 recoveries; Tipton – 43 positive, 393 negative, 14 recoveries; and Weakly – 5 positive, 130 negative, 1 recovery.

The report listed the number of fatalities by county. Those results are as follows:

Anderson – 1, Bedford – 1, Blount – 3, Davidson – 13, Franklin – 1, Greene – 1, Hamblen – 1, Hamilton – 10, Hawkins – 1, Haywood – 1, Knox – 3, Macon – 2, Marion – 1, Marshall – 1, Montgomery – 2, Obion – 1, Rutherford – 6, Shelby – 20, Sullivan – 1, Sumner – 21, Trousdale – 1, Williamson – 4, Wilson – 1; (the TN Dept. of Health noted numbers given may not add up to the total number of confirmed cases due to reporting delays and/or missing data).

To help flatten the curve and reduce the impact of COVID-19, the Tennessee Department of Health recommends the following:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water (or alcohol-based hand rub) for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing or sneezing

• Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands

• Stay home when you are sick

• Cover your coughs and sneezes with your arm or a tissue

• Clean and disinfect objects (e.g., cell phone, computer) and high touch surfaces regularly

• Take everyday precautions to keep space between yourself and others

• When you go out in public, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact and wash your hands often

• Avoid crowds as much as possible

• Avoid cruise travel and non-essential air travel

• During a COVID-19 outbreak in your community, stay home as much as possible to further reduce your risk of being exposed.”

  • Dyer County numbers will continue to increase based on what I saw in Dyersburg today. Lots of people out and about, families in the grocery stores, and maybe 25% of people wearing masks. This virus will grow here if we don't just stay home....Please.
