County health insurance fund up to $250,000 short

Dyer County's self-insurance fund for employee health insurance is up to $250,000 short for the fiscal year and commissioners are considering raising the percentage of premiums charged employees. "For our fiscal year (ending June 30) we have $131,000 left," county Trustee Judy Patton told members of the county commission's insurance committee Monday. The Dyersburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a federal $73,189 law enforcement grant Monday night at a meeting one alderman alleged was conducted illegally. Alderman Bob Dean cast the lone dissenting vote on the matter. He said the grant is discriminatory because it provides insurance benefits to police and fire department employees that are not provided to workers in other departments. If the four of you recall, last week in this space I told how my Granny said when I was young that the inside design on a persimmon seed revealed what kind of winter was ahead. If it resembled a spoon, that meant a snow shovel and lots of snow. If a sharp knife edge was revealed, then that meant ice. And a split in the top that looked like a fork meant a collection of nastiness...
