Students at Dyersburg State will attend their final classes for the summer session Tuesday, which was originally scheduled to end on Friday. At the University of Tennessee at Martin, where the first session of summer classes had already ended, the second session will be delayed for at least a week. Dyersburg landfill opening Saturday

The City of Dyersburg Landfill will be open to city residents on Saturdays for a trial basis beginning this week. The landfill will be open from 7-11:30 a.m. on the first Saturday of the month for the next six months, weather permitting. If closed the first Saturday, the landfill will reopen for half a day on the second Saturday to accommodate city residents who can't use it during the week because of their working hours. ...

City board approves 2002-03 expenditures

Voted against a Republican plan to raise the sales tax

Roy Herron, D-Dresden, said Monday he voted against a Republican plan to raise the sales tax to 10.25 percent in many places in Tennessee partially because it would have been unfair to people living in his rural district. "Most rural people pay a much higher percentage of their income in sales taxes than wealthier city folks," he said by phone from his Nashville office. "Most rural people already are paying more than our fair share. This bill would have made that worse."...
