Multinational effort aids Iraqi child

Noor Abd Al-Hady Hassan is a 5-year-old little girl from Iraq who is in need of surgery to correct a birth defect that caused her to have a hole in her heart between her two ventricles. Her condition has been diagnosed as Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). If not corrected, Noor will be susceptible to heart failure. This defect is easily corrected in the United States, but doctors in Iraq are not able to perform the surgery at this time...

Education committee recommends increases wheel, property taxes

The County Education Committee on Wednesday recommended a $10 increase in the wheel tax and a 12- to 13-cent increase in the property tax to stop the drain of school system reserve funds and give teachers a 2 percent local raise. John Uitendaal, who chairs the education committee, said the increases were designed to head off an anticipated $350,000 deficit in reserve dollars and pay $115,000 to match state salary increases. ...
