Newbern increases electric rates

The Newbern Board of Aldermen passed a rate increase for electricity Tuesday night to pay for a rate increase from the Tennessee Valley Authority. TVA is increasing residential electric rates by 5.78 percent and industrial and commercial rates by 7.04 percent. The TVA recommended that the city pass on the rate increase rather than absorb it and deplete the electric department's reserve funds...

They plunged their shiny silver shovels into the ground and lifted small plugs of dirt.
