Vanessa Cain of Halls was recently was named one of 10 runners-up in the second annual "So You Want to Be a Children's Book Writer?" contest sponsored by Scholastic Books and Woman's Day Magazine. Cain's manuscript, "Miss Kate's Patience," earned her ninth place and six autographed, hardback Scholastic books. Halls woman takes Lenox man's car, crashes in Missouri

A Halls woman reportedly stole a car from a county man before crashing the vehicle near Caruthersville, Mo. on Sunday. Man who told judge mower ate his license has collision with officer

The man who in January told a judge his driver's license was eaten by a lawnmower narrowly averted a head-on collision with an off-duty police officer on Friday. Permission sought by Corps to probe old bombing range in western county

The U.S. Army is renewing its interest in a World War II bombing range west of Finley. Instead of dropping more bombs, though, the Army wants to know if there are any old, unexploded ordnance that need to be removed. Ed Blocher, a realty specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Mobile, Ala., is in the process of contacting persons who own land in the old bombing range. Knife found in courtroom on row near jail inmates

A knife was discovered secreted below a seat on Friday in the Dyersburg Municipal Courtroom, at the edge of the second row reserved for jail inmates. According to the Dyersburg Police Department report, attorney Jim Powell noticed the knife, described as a silver "Boy Scout style" 11-blade instrument, at about 10:25 a.m. Powell had left his seat five minutes earlier and told police the knife was not there before he left...

Juvenile escapee turns self in at police department

The teenager who escaped from a detention center on Monday turned himself in on Friday night at the Dyersburg Police Department. The juvenile appeared at the DPD headquarters at about 7:30 p.m. after three days of hiding. The teenager, a 17-year-old black male, is reported to have attacked a female detention officer at The McDowell Center for Children at about 8:30 p.m. Monday, then used her keys to exit and then scaled a 10-foot-high fence to escape...
