Fire at Sun Products, fireman injured
(Local News ~ 11/23/10)
At 8 a.m., on Monday morning, a fire began on the south side of the Sun Products building, located at 2450 Huish Road, in Dyersburg. Members of the Dyersburg Fire Department responded to the blaze, originally reported to be on the eighth floor of the structure and venting to the roof. But firemen and Sun Products emergency response team members later learned the fire was contained to the dust collector located on the outside of the building. Sun Products Senior Environmental Health and Safety Inspector Coby Kimbrell said officials are still determining the extent of the damage to the facility. "There was a significant amount of damage to that particular piece of equipment," said Kimbrell. "We have our own emergency response team here, so we started working on the fire before the fire department showed up." Kimbrell said during the day shift, the plant has approximately 25 ERT members located in various areas throughout the facility. There were about 20 on hand on Monday morning. "Everyone involved did a good job," said Kimbrell, who said Dyersburg firemen were responsible for extinguishing the fire. "And the fire department all coordinated well. I'd like to give thanks to everyone who contributed." Sun Products personnel were evacuated from the building without incident, with Kimbrell stating that the fire will not cause any employees to miss work. A Dyersburg fireman was injured on the scene, however, when a coupling from the truck he was working on broke free and caused what DFD officials hope will be only a mild concussion. He was sent to Dyersburg Regional Medical Center for treatment. DFD Fire Inspector and Fire Prevention Officer Mark Sykes said the fireman's protective gear helped save him from serious injury or death.
