Recruit of the Month

Spec. Elliott Martin (left) is congratulated by Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Cole on being named Recruit of the Month. Martin who is vice president at a bank in Gates said he joined the guard for national pride and service to his country and the state of Tennessee. He calls it one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences in his life thus far. Martin will be heading to Officer Candidate School right after he completes his master's degree program in the spring. Cole says that Martin was selected for the honor because he lives the Army values, is a great role model and had a great physical training score of 212.

Sports auction and celebrity waiter event to be held at Sweet Peppers

Ten-year-old Hunter Tucker has battled Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and Central Nervous System disease over the last two years. A celebrity waiter event and sports auction event is being held at the Sweet Peppers Deli in Dyersburg on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 2 to 7 p.m. A variety of autographed memorabilia will be auctioned including: a Pat Summit basketball, an Eddie George football and picture, a hockey puck signed by the Nashville Predators, and an Ole Miss football and jersey. Season tickets to UT Martin football and basketball games will also be auctioned off in addition to other sports items. Celebrity waiters include: Dyer County Property Assessor Sheila Holmes, Dyersburg Mayor John Holden, DSCC President Dr. Karen Bowyer and Dyer County District Attorney General Phil Bivens.

Leadership Dyer County to hold mixer Thursday

The Dyersburg/Dyer County Chamber of Commerce's 2010-2011 Leadership Class listens to a presentation by Principal Peggy Dodds on a tour of Dyer County High School. Leadership Dyer County will hold a mixer at the Lannom Center at 5:30 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 27. All Adult Leadership Alumni are invited to meet the Leadership Class of 2012-2013. The event requests business attire, with beverages and hors d'oeuvres served. Dyer County Leadership Alumni Association presents the event for the 478 graduates of the Chamber-sponsored program. St. Jude motorcycle riders journey on to Memphis

Motorcycles are gassed and ready to go as riders gathered for a prayer prior to departing for Memphis. The riders began their journey from Peoria, Ill. and were en route to deliver a check for $531,000 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Riders raised $1,000 and passengers raise $500 to participate in the 465-mile trek.

Unwanted prescription drugs being collected Saturday

On Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. City Drug and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Fraternity to hold benefit for Nunley family
