Stowe, Trojan players attend Michigan satellite camp at Oakland High School

With satellite camps making national sports headlines in recent weeks, Dyersburg High School head coach Bart Stowe and about a dozen of his players spent a long day on the road and in Murfreesboro attending the satellite camp held by University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh for both exposure and to improve personal skills.

Historical Society welcomes members of BHS steering committee, appoints new board member

The Dyer County Historical Society convened late Tuesday afternoon to hold elections for new board members and discuss various updates. In addition, Thomas White, Yolanda Harris, and Larry Williams provided board members with a Bruce Community presentation, which highlighted the history of the Bruce High School, and its vital role in enriching the lives of numerous African Americans in the Dyer County area.

Juneteenth Celebration to be held Saturday at Future City

On Sept. 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, demanding that Confederate states return to the Union or have their slaves deemed permanently free. While the proclamation would not go into effect until January of 1863, it would take approximately two and a half more years, on June 19, 1865, before news of the emancipation would finally find its way to the ears of those slaves located in the state of Texas, which, at that time, was heavily populated with slaves, planters, and slaveholders, all of whom had fled from the war-ridden lands of eastern states that had become heavily dominated by Union troops.

Wreck on bypass results in minor injury of Missouri resident

A wreck that occurred Wednesday morning, at approximately 11:45 a.m., resulted in the minor injury of 69-year-old Harvey Burden, a resident of Bragg City, Mo. According to Dyersburg Police Department, Burden, owner of a 2007 white Cadillac, drove forward into oncoming traffic, in turn, striking the front of a 2012 Red F250, driven by 47-year-old Christopher Lewis of Friendship, who was traveling southbound on the bypass.

Whittle sees progress as dead period nears

With the dead period coming up on June 26, the Dyer County Choctaws are getting ready for their final week of workouts before taking the two weeks off that surround the July 4 holiday and first-year head coach David Whittle has seen progress from his players' efforts. "They're working hard," Whittle said. "We're getting in better shape. We weren't in very good shape. So, we've been doing more running than what they're used to doing so it's been a progress."

According to Feeding America, the Dyer County area, in 2014, held a food insecurity rate of 17.2 percent or 6,540 individuals who lack access to a sufficient amount of healthy and nutritious foods. Among those numbers are countless children who go day to day without knowing where their next meal will come from, or if that meal will provide them with the proper nutrition that they need for healthy development; a disturbing fact when considering how much food is thrown away per household and business per day.

Newbern Budget Committee discusses annual budget, additional costs to safe room

Recently, the Newbern Board of Mayor and Alderman convened to discuss the city's budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Highlighted items discussed during the meeting included additional funds needed for the construction of the downtown Newbern safe room, increases in the rental of Oakview Recreational Center and modular building, cost-of-living increases, and increased equipment costs for the Newbern Fire Department.

For the second consecutive year, Paramedic and EMT students at Dyersburg State Community College got a taste of a real-life emergency Wednesday, June 15. The DSCC gymnasium was transformed into a disaster area complete with victims' cries, smoke, and alarms sounding.

Felon receives probation for meth, firearm possession

In recent Circuit Court proceedings, a convicted felon from Finley pleaded guilty to two charges, while another was dismissed. Johnny Newsom, 59 Jackson Crossing Road, pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine over .5 grams with intent to sell, and pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime as well.
