Local author hosts book-signing, showcases original art

Local author and artist Lowell Tillman recently hosted a book-signing event at Java Café in order to promote his recent publication of sci-fi thriller 'The Traveler', which is the first in a series of five books that Tillman plans to feature throughout the next four years. In addition, Tillman showcased some of his original artwork, which, in addition to a copy of his book, was also available to purchase. A self-developed artist, Tillman has been painting for numerous years, and has developed exceptional skill in creating pen and ink art sketches entailing an assortment of landscapes, wildlife, and portraits. Tillman is also credited with the cover art for 'The Traveler', as well as his next book, which is currently in progress and entitled, 'Hiding in Plain Sight'. Tillman anticipates the release of the second book will occur sometime later this year.

BU Bowling inks Dyer County's Deanna Frealy

The Bethel University women's bowling program signed Dyer County High School standout Deanna Frealy Monday. Deanna is the daughter of Troy Frealy and Natacha Cathey of Dyersburg, Tennessee and will major in physical therapy. She had an average of 180 in the state individual singles in 2015. ...

Piano Guild membership benefits instructors, pupils

Kelly, a longtime Piano Guild (PG) member and supporter, praises the organization's theory, technical performance, memorization of literature, and curriculum standards.

Dolls brighten Highlands residents' day

Julie Francher and her mother Judy Merck, both of Dyersburg, brightened the day for some residents at the Highlands on Friday, June 10. Merck was called in to work that day and was unable to present her hobby. However, Francher was able to bring quite the collection of 18-inch dolls and the wardrobe her mother crafted for them.

Discovery Park to host 2nd Annual Car Show

Organizers of the First Discovery Park Car Show were pleased to have over 200 cars on display in 2015, and guests from around the region. The Second Annual Discovery Park of America Car Show is set for Saturday, June 25 and is sponsored by Herman Jenkins Motors of Union City. Participants are asked to have their cars at the park by 8 a.m. the morning of the show. Registration is available online or at the park up to the day of the car show. Gates will open at 10 to the public and entrance to the Discovery Park Grounds will be free that day. Tickets into Discovery Center will be just $10 plus tax for everybody.

Paddlers invited to Forked Deer Saturday

Local paddlers will take to the Forked Deer River to celebrate the opening day of the Main Street Farmers Market. This is another 'bring your own boat and paddle with us' event that will start at the Farmers Market at 8 a.m. this Saturday. Paddlers will sign in and drive to the Parker Ditch boat ramp to begin the three-hour trip back to the floating dock at the Farmers Market. Note that local water levels will be challenging, as they are unseasonably low. All paddlers will be required to have proper gear and personal floatation devices. Haslam names DSCC alum Parker Commissioner of Correction

NASHVILLE -- Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam has announced the appointment of Tony Parker as commissioner of the Tennessee Department of the Correction (TDOC) effective June 19. Parker will replace Derrick Schofield who announced June 1 he is leaving the administration to join GEO Group in Florida as executive vice president for continuum of care.
