Whittle pleased after 7-on-7 with Halls

The Dyer County Choctaws got their busy early week schedule off to a good start on Monday night as the team hosted 7-on-7 action with Halls. "I thought it went pretty well," Dyer County head coach David Whittle said. "The kids competed well and, you know, execution can always get better this time of the year."

Saturday Flight School students fly for finale

Local Dyersburg students completed their Saturday Flight School (SFS) with a visit from pilots Bro. David Powell and Bernard Green. Students had previously attended the SFS in June with weather conditions that prevented their actual flight experience. Powell reached out to the State Gazette and made arrangements with Thelma Rudd and Yolanda Harris, and the students' parents to really give them a 'Taste of Aviation'. All SFS students present Saturday, July 16 at Dyersburg Municipal Airport were treated to rides from Powell and Green in their private planes.

Candidates, supporters campaign downtown

Dyer County early voting kicked off July 15 and will continue through July 30. Mid-morning on Friday, supporters from a handful of campaigns were available to rally behind their chosen candidate and show their support.

'Pack the Bus' supports local families' school supply needs

It is time to 'Pack the Bus' again! Local residents and others who want to contribute to help families with school supplies have a great opportunity to do so while being rewarded for their help. Chick-fil-A will host the school bus for the annual school supply drive that treats residents who 'Pack the Bus' with a free Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich. The school supplies collected during this event will benefit students in both the Dyer County and Dyersburg City school systems.

County to explore more options to refinance bonds

Previously discussed by Finance Committee members on June 21 was the option to refinance bonds originally taken out for the construction of Dyer County High School. First taken out in 1999, the original balance of the bond totaled $31 million, and was refinanced a second time in 2008-09 for $19,910,000, a direct result of nationwide financial crisis. Currently, the balance on the bond totals $9,803,977.53.

City Board votes to accept quitclaim deeds on select detention areas

On Monday, July 18 at 7 p.m. in the Dyersburg Municipal Courtroom the Board of Mayor and Aldermen met to discuss agenda items including an attorney invoice, approval of committee meeting minutes, and acceptance of city resolutions. An attorney invoice from Lannom Coronado PLLC in the amount of $9,560.60 was approved for payment. Alderman Bob Kirk pointed out a substantial amount of the invoice was toward time spent regarding the employee pension plan lawsuit and asked if Mayor John Holden was at liberty to elaborate on the status of that lawsuit, which he was not. Kirk was advised by Holden to contact Lannom who could provide an update.

Dyersburg Trojans acclimating in second week of football preseason

With the start of the high school football season now under 30 days away, the Dyersburg Trojans took steps this week to get closer to being ready for the Aug. 19 home opener with MLK-Prep as the team went through the three-day acclimation period this week and will conclude with two-a-days today.

Nellie Mae Chamness, 84, died Sunday, July 17, 2016 at her son's residence in Greenwood, Ark. She was born March 8, 1932 in rural Hickman, Ky. to the late Albert and Pearl Etheridge. Nellie loved her family and was an avid Cardinals baseball fan.
