Dyersburg hosts Kickoff Invitational at the Farms

For those that had a free Monday on their schedule, local golf links had a chance to see both Dyersburg and Dyer County golfers in action without having to drive far or to multiple venues as Dyersburg hosted the annual Kickoff Invitational at the Farms.

Oakwood hosts community pancake breakfast Friday

On Friday, Aug. 19, Oakwood Community Living Center hosted a community breakfast with pancakes, bacon, juice, and coffee. Dyersburg Mayor John Holden and City Recorder Bob Jones stopped by to visit. Jimmy Deese: Car guy with a big heart

"It's not about me, it's about we -- as a community," said Jimmy Deese, president of Omni Tech Manufacturing of Dyersburg. Anyone who knows Deese will tell you that his statement is true. Deese was born in Dyersburg and grew up in Milltown. "My family and I lived on Curry Street. Growing up was great! The whole family was in Milltown. My best friends were my cousins, and we would go walk to ball games on Friday nights. It was a great neighborhood, a good place to live."

Towering 10-foot-tall tomato plant growing in Dyersburg

This towering tomato plant was grown by Dyersburg resident Billy Stanfield. The plant, standing over 10 feet tall, is a Goliath Hybrid Tomato Plant. "I'm 80 years old and have grown tomatoes all of my life," said Stanfield. "This is the biggest one I have ever seen."

Local attorney qualifies for Senior Olympic national games

Local Lannom Coronado PLLC attorney and medal-winning Olympic swimmer Scott Haight recently competed in the Tennessee State Finals of the Senior Olympics this June in Williamson County. He competed in two events: the 50-yard breaststroke, in which Haight won a bronze medal, and the 50-yard freestyle. In the freestyle event, Haight placed fourth, but came in with a time that qualified him for nationals next June in Birmingham, Ala.

Dyersburg man charged with first-degree murder

MIKE SMITH msmith@stategazette.com On Monday, members of the Dyersburg Police Department arrested a local man on a first-degree murder charge involving the death of a 2-month-old infant. Jon Dillon Wheeler, 25, 1724 Phillips St., was arrested on Monday afternoon and charged with the crime. He is currently is being held at the Dyer County Law Enforcement Center without bond, pending an initial appearance in Dyersburg City Court scheduled for 4 p.m. today...
