Three Oaks holds off Northview rally; NMS boys dominate in split between county teams

A sluggish start by Northview combined with a strong shooting performance in the first half by Three Oaks proved to be all the Lady Choctaws from Upper Finley Road needed as they held off a late rally from their county rivals to take a 46-39 win on Thursday night at Three Oaks Middle School.

Mary Evelyn "Polly" Thompson, 81, of Dresden, TN, formerly of Dyersburg, TN, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. She was born on April 11, 1936 in Frog Jump, TN, to the late Felix Porter Chilcutt and the late Mary Lillie White Chilcutt. Polly was a retired nursing assistant at Parkview Hospital and was a member of Hodges Chapel Baptist Church in Dresden. ...

Office on Aging hosts annual Thanksgiving luncheon

On Wednesday, Nov. 15, the Dyer County Office on Aging, located at 1400 Hornbrook in Dyersburg, held its annual Thanksgiving luncheon for members of the community who are seniors or disabled. Approximately 100 individuals were fed a meal consisting of turkey, dressing and all of the trimmings.

DSCC faculty and staff presented Outstanding Alumni Awards

Health Council discusses updates, upcoming events

Tuesday morning, the Dyer County Health Council convened for its quarterly meeting. Items on the agenda included updates on RAHHABE, Life Maze, TN Strong, and coordinated school health. In addition, Health Council members discussed upcoming events, including Healthier TN, Trapped and the Great American Smokeout, which began today. Dyer County / Dyersburg Coordinated School Health Dyer County Health Coordinator Jessica Lampkin announced that student health screenings at all 8 county schools have been completed and follow-up letters have been sent to parents. The Lebonheur on the Move unit has visited county schools, including Newbern Elementary, Dyer County High School, and Three Oaks Middle School. Lampkin says that 250 employees were administered flu shots, with 299 students in 7 schools also receiving the flu vaccination. To date, nutrition/ hygiene lessons have been taught to 21 elementary school classes. Kristen Bird, health coordinator for Dyersburg City Schools, announced that 150 students recently hit the pavement in support of Dyersburg Intermediate School’s 2nd Walk to School event. The event was held on Oct. 13, and will be followed up by a second event set for Nov. 17. Along with students of county schools, there were roughly 150 middle school students in city schools to receive flu vaccinations. Bird went on to discuss LeBonheur on the Move, a mobile unit, which has visited the schools several times since this fall. In addition to providing students with healthcare services, the Lebonheur on the Move will also be making follow-up health visits with students. The No Gain Holiday Challenge will begin on Nov. 17. City school staff competing and completing the challenge will be entered into a drawing to win one of seven prizes, including a $25 gift card to Hibbett Sports, $25 gift card to GNC, $25 gift card to Sunflower Health, Instant Pot Cooker, NutriBullet Pro, Water Infusion bottle, or Bluetooth headphones. Small Starts for Families Burns discussed a Healthier Tennessee grant of $2,500 for the Small Starts for Families program. The grant requires: • Three community organizations that reach families. • Coordinators must host information session on Small Starts for Families. • Get 100 people to sign up and use Small Starts for Families. Obtain 3 testimonials from families using Small Starts for Families. • Promote Small Starts for Families at all HTC events. Trapped Announced by Lampkin was the upcoming event, Trapped- Dangers Lurking in the Digital World. The event will be held Nov. 29, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Lannom Center, and will offer informational sessions on human trafficking, bullying, the dark web, and a special panel discussion with children who have experienced some these things firsthand. Dyer County Health Department Healthy Development Coordinator Tim King discussed grant opportunities of $10,000 for rural counties in Tennessee. King says the Competitive grant, totaling $5,000, became available several weeks ago, which is open for all Tennessee counties, rural or urban. Letters of intent should be submitted to the Dyer County Health Dept. by Friday, Nov. 17.

City finance committee OKs DFD request, communications agreement

On Thursday, the City of Dyersburg Finance Committee convened in the upstairs conference room of City Hall. The main topic of discussion on the agenda was the review of the First Quarter Financial Statements. Various department heads were also in attendance.
