Discovery Park historical interpreter brings new life to The Settlement with Heritage Garden

New life is sprouting in Discovery Park of America’s 1800s settlement with the introduction of a Heritage Garden. Historical interpreter Mike Ramsey has begun a heritage garden that will serve as a long-term educational and demonstration project. A labor of love for those who work in many different departments at DPA, the multipurpose garden will display samplings of traditional heirloom plants used for produce, flowers for dyes and even medicinal herbs for Ramsey to utilize in future demonstrations.. ...

Discovery Park announces 2019 summer camps

School is almost out, and it is time to get children and grandchildren enrolled for summer camp. Discovery Park of America is offering four summer camps in 2019. “We have attempted to plan around other summer time activities that are already available,” director of education Polly Brasher said. “We didn’t do our camps on top of UTM’s summer program because we want the children in this area to have multiple educational opportunities throughout the summer months.”...

Dyersburg schools recognize retiring educators, teachers of the year

On Tuesday, May 14, at 6 p.m., the Dyersburg City School System recognized local educators with a celebration dinner at Dyersburg Intermediate School. The annual event honored individuals who would be retiring at the conclusion of the school year as well as those who were selected as Teachers of the Year.

At the Shelter

The number of animals ready for adoption at the Shelter is 95 – still rising. Rescue groups are working hard to help find new homes for as many as they can, but there is a great need for adopters and fosters. The Shelter also needs volunteers to walk dogs, donate and/or shred newspapers for litter boxes, check on water bowls, clean cages, etc...

Power Board OKs rate analyst, charge-off

On Wednesday, May 15, at noon, the Dyersburg Electric System Power Board convened for their regular monthly meeting. All power board members, along with the members of the DES Executive Management Team, were present. DES President and CEO Stephen Lane presented 2 new items of business before the board members, a request to approve a new rate analyst as well as a bad-debt charge-off.

DCHS Class of 2019 visits Three Oaks and Northview for Senior Walk

Inspiring future generations to fulfill their academic goals and ambitions, soon-to-be graduates of the Dyer County High School Class of 2019 walked the halls of their former middle schools Thursday morning, May 16. Graduates re-visiting Three Oaks Middle School were welcomed through the door with a roar of applause from 6-8 grade students. The relatively new tradition of the Senior Walk proves not only inspirational to younger students but also to the former middle school teachers of those students who played a large role in helping them pursue their academic goals earlier in life.
