Dyer County COVID-19 update for August 12

With the release of the Tennessee Department of Health’s daily COVID-19 update on Wednesday, the department reported Dyer County as having 679 total COVID-19 cases, which contains confirmed and probable cases, as well as 363 active cases and 308 recoveries. The total number of deaths in the county due to the virus remained at 8.

DPD arrest men on weapon charges

On August 11, at 8:41 p.m., Dyersburg Police arrested two local men on weapons charges and a third wanted by the Dyer County Sheriff’s Department. Officers arrested Latavis Bailey, 43, and Terry Haymon, 47, both of Dyersburg, for one charge each of felons in possession of a weapon. A third man, Anthony Dismuke, 32, of Dyersburg, was also arrested for charges of theft and property and failure to appear in court from the county.

Historical Society program recognizes ratification of 19th Amendment

On Tuesday evening, the Dyer County Historical Society met at the Professional Development Center for their August program, which spotlighted the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, allowing women the right to vote. The group welcomed Penny Switzer, retired educator and member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), who reviewed the book, “The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote” by Elaine Weiss. Additionally, those in attendance could view a new display received by the historical society from the National Archives in Washington, D.C., which outlines the 19th Amendment.
