County approves budget by majority vote

The Dyer County Commissioners had a very busy evening on Monday as they gathered to vote on the 2011-2012 county budget along with its multiple accompanying resolutions. The commissioners were presented with a budget that was recommended by the budget committee after a month of tense meetings and compromises, which included a 25 percent reduction to most charitable contributions, a 4 percent decrease to all department budgets and a 10 percent reduction in commissioners' salaries. ...

Jail inmate dies of apparent suicide

An inmate being housed in the Dyer County Jail was pronounced dead on Sunday morning after allegedly hanging himself outside his cell. Derek Taylor, 40, 824 Hull St., was being held in the Dyer County Jail on a $7,500 bond after being arrested by Dyersburg Police on Tuesday, July 19. He was charged with two counts of theft under $1,000 and was set to appear in Dyersburg City Court on Monday at 4 p.m...

Two killed in Saturday crash

A motor vehicle accident claimed the lives of a mother and daughter on Saturday morning, while sending a third to the hospital. According to Dyersburg Police Sgt. Brian Peckenpaugh, Christie Haynes, 37, of Dyersburg, and her 8-year-old daughter died at the scene of a one-car crash at the tunnel on Kist Avenue. Haynes' 9-year-old son was injured during the wreck and had to be transported to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis...
