Newbern police chief reaches out to community through Neighborhood Watch program
(Local News ~ 06/09/16)
Pictured above, Newbern Police Chief Richard 'Red' Barnes is seen speaking to several of the community's residents during Tuesday night's Neighborhood Watch meeting. During the meeting, Chief Barnes provided residents with various ways in which they could work together to ensure the safety of their neighborhood such as proper exterior home lighting; to avoid potential break-ins, working together to monitor the streets of their neighborhoods, and staying 'on the lookout' for suspicious activity in and around their communities. This is the fourth meeting that has been held since the Neighborhood Watch meetings first began in late 2015. Chief Barnes anticipates that, over time, more and more community members will begin to participate in the monthly meetings, allowing them to build further momentum. 'Our goal is to let criminals know that we are watching them, and that criminal behavior will not be tolerated in the city of Newbern. Through providing these monthly meetings, the Newbern Police Department hopes to empower local community members with helpful knowledge that will allow them identify any suspicious activity, which will, in turn, help to keep their homes and neighborhoods much safer,' stated Chief Barnes.

As a group, we wanted to contribute to their effort.' The Crawfish Classic Golf Tourney and Boil is a two-day, two-person scramble with a shrimp and crawfish boil. The tournament pays out four flights and is hosted at The Farms Golf Club every May. 'A few of us got together with the intent of creating a regional tournament that promotes local business, showcases the Farms Golf Course, provides great food and entertainment as well as give bad golfers like me an opportunity to win by having the extra flight,' explained Davis.
