Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge hosting Youth Fishing Rodeo on Saturday

To celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week, TWRA and Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge are hosting the Annual Youth Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, June 11. Fishing will start at 6:30 a.m. and last until 10:30 a.m. at the pond next to the deer check station, just south of the refuge headquarters off of Hwy. 76. The fishing rodeo is open to kids 12 years old and younger. Fishing will start at 6:30 a.m. and last until 10:30 a.m. The rodeo will be held at Tanner Adams Lake on Highway 76 S just past the refuge headquarters (three miles south of Exit 56 and one and half miles north of Exit 52 from Hwy 76). Please bring your own fishing pole. Only live bait will be allowed. Door prizes will be given away to participants at the end of the rodeo. Dyersburg gets a 'Taste of Aviation' at Saturday Flight School

Saturday, June 4 several students from Dyer and Lauderdale counties spent the afternoon exploring the world of flight at Dyersburg Municipal Airport. A Taste of Aviation, the group who puts on the Saturday Flight School (SFS) program, provided hours of information and activity engaging students' minds and encouraging them to set goals. Sponsors for this event included Marvin Ganaway, Dr. Monique Casey-Bolden, and Hudson Funeral Home of Dyersburg.

Okeena Pool opens

Tuesday, June 7 marks the beginning of swim season for many Dyersburg residents; Okeena Pool is now open and ready! The wait has been totally worth it as needed renovations and upgrades were made to improve the entire swimming experience. This diver and a handful of other swimmers took full advantage of being 'early birds' at Okeena Pool's opening day.

Downtown Newbern renovations ahead of schedule

Newbern's downtown renovation is making healthy progress, as members of Ford Construction have already begun to tear out and replace a large portion of the sidewalks. Once complete, the downtown area will be complemented by new streetlights, sidewalk, landscaping and fountain area. This renovation has been highly anticipated by city officials, who initially received approval for the renovation grant five years ago, and have since been patiently awaiting the much-needed updates. According to City Recorder Jason Roberts, the project is running ahead of schedule and should create little to no problem for the city's upcoming Depot Days event.

'Peg + Cat' visit McIver's Grant Library for an afternoon of fun

PBS Kids' television show "Peg + Cat" characters made an afternoon visit to McIver's Grant Public Library in downtown Dyersburg at 1p.m. Wednesday, June 8. Peg and Cat are the main characters of a math-based kids' program on the PBS station, broadcasted locally by WLJT in Martin, Tenn.

County school board and budget committee approve annual budget

The Dyer County Board of Education convened late Tuesday night to discuss the annual budget, including the Federal Project Budgets and General Purpose Transportation and Central Cafeteria Fund budgets. Opening the meeting, upcoming Superintendent Dr. Larry Lusk requested that board members approve the proposed 2016-2017 Consolidated Application.

City board OKs annexation of property, bids

The City of Dyersburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen met on Monday night to discuss items on the agenda, with all items discussed unanimously passing with the board's approval. Among items to be voted on for approval included a proposed beer permit at the city golf course, a public hearing on the annexation of property on Radio Road, and a pair of bids from City Purchasing Agent Greg Williams.
