Dyersburg opens 13AAA play with win over Choctaws

The early week rain may have wiped out the majority of Tuesday night’s sports schedule among the five local schools, but soccer fans were able to take in a marquee match-up at J.C. Sawyers Stadium as Dyersburg hosted Dyer County in the District 13AAA opener for both teams.
Dyer County was able to keep it close early before a trio of first half Trojan goals set the tone for Dyersburg to take the 13AAA opener 5-0.
“That also shows that Dyer County is making strides,” Dyersburg Head Coach Musa Manneh said of the Choctaws’ effort against his team. “That’s also good for our district and good for the county.
“They’ve improved. Yes, our boys got the win but (Dyer County) put in a fight. I’m happy for them.”
“We’re proud of the guys for the effort they put in out there,” Dyer County Head Coach Stephen Goodman said. “At the end of the day, we didn’t get the job done.
“We’re looking forward to getting better and the new challenges ahead of us.”
The loss snaps Dyer County’s five-game winning streak and is the start of four straight District 13AAA games in a row. Goodman kept it simple when asked what he wanted his team to take from Tuesday night’s loss at Dyersburg.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Goodman added.
Both teams had multiple chances during the opening 20 minutes of the first half but neither the Trojans nor the Choctaws were able to get one past either goalkeeper.
Dyersburg struck first, getting a Camarius Quinn pass to Nick Medlin for the goal in the 20th minute to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Dyersburg added to its lead in the 20th minute with a second Medlin goal to put the Trojans ahead 2-0.
The Trojans were able to tack on one more goal late in the first half with a goal from Marcus Harrell in the 40th minute to put Dyersburg on top 3-0.
Dyer County was able to keep Dyersburg off the board early in the second half as well before a Medlin goal in the 55th minute extended the Trojan lead to 4-0.
The black and gold tacked on one more goal in the 65th minute off the foot of Medlin to take a five-goal lead for the remainder of the night.
“We’re in a good place whenever we can keep a clean sheet and get a win like that,” Manneh added. “We’re 1-0 in district so we’ll see how it goes.”
Dyersburg returns to action on Thursday when the Trojans travel up Highway 51 to Troy to take on Obion County Central at 5:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Dyer County returns to action as the Choctaws travel to Medina to take on South Gibson at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
